Press Release On West Nile Virus from America's Blood Centers
Following recent reports that West Nile Virus can be spread through blood transfusions, America's Blood Centers has been providing factual information to the media and the public. Questions and answers about this important health issue are below.

What is West Nile Virus?
The West Nile Virus (WNV) was first discovered in Africa over sixty years ago. Today, it is commonly found in Africa, West Asia and the Middle East. It was first found in the US in 1999 and has spread rapidly to most of the country. Most often the virus infects birds and mosquitoes, but humans and other mammals can be infected by the bite of an infected mosquito.
