| Thalassemia Major is a genetic disease prevalent in certain communities
in Gujarat. The children of such Thalassemia Major are unable to
produce adequate quantity of Hemoglobin. Effectively, they have
to be transfused one unit of BLOOD every month till they survive.
Usually their life span is about fifteen years only. During such
period, they require 100 units of blood over & above the medical
line of management. This disease however is preventable in these
communities, if proper pre- marriage counseling is done-people with
Thalessemia traits should be identified and marriage between them
discouraged. About 320 such children are registered. They do not
have enough voluntary donors to meet their requirements. Also, many
of them can not afford to pay for treatment and Blood Transfusion.
This leads to poor disease condition and early death of the child.
In keeping with the same, we want to ensure that no Thalessemia
patient or his or her distraught parents should be put in a crisis
as far as blood requirement is concerned. At Indu Thalessemia Centre
this disease is comprehensively addressed from all angles. |
